Big changes — a new home, a new year, the end of a relationship — often pass without any pause to acknowledge them. Ritual offers a way to mark these transitions so they feel witnessed.

The threshold bowl

Place a bowl of water, a sprig of rosemary, and a pinch of salt near your front door. Each evening for a week, pause there for a moment and name one thing you are leaving behind and one you are inviting in.

The candle hour

Light a single candle and let it be the only light in the room for twenty minutes. Sit with a notebook. There is no need to write anything profound; the purpose is to slow down.

Clearing a corner

  • Choose one shelf, drawer, or windowsill.
  • Remove everything and clean it thoroughly.
  • Return only the objects that feel meaningful now.
Ritual is attention given a shape.

These practices draw on many folk traditions, but they belong to you once you begin. Adapt them freely and notice what feels honest.
