Many people pick up a tarot deck, pull a few cards, and feel nothing at all. That is normal. Like any reflective practice, reading tarot is easier when you prepare the space and your mind first.

Set the scene

Choose a time when you will not be interrupted. Clear the table, dim the lights, and put your phone in another room. These simple acts signal to yourself that this is a moment for attention.

Shape your intention

Before you shuffle, write your question down. A good question is open, personal, and focused on what you can influence.

  • "What am I not seeing about this situation?"
  • "What would help me move forward with care?"
  • "What is this season asking of me?"

Read the picture first

Before reaching for a guidebook, describe what you see on the card: the colors, the figures, the direction they face. Your own associations are often more useful than a memorised keyword.

A card's meaning lives somewhere between the tradition and the reader.

Close the reading

Note the date, the cards, and one sentence about how you feel. Over time, this journal becomes the most valuable part of your practice.
