Smoke rising from a snuffed candle

In New Orleans, the doorway matters. It is where the outside world meets your home, and folk practice has long treated it as something to keep clean and guarded.

You will need

  • A small bowl of salt
  • A white candle
  • A broom
  • A cup of water

The ritual

  1. Sweep from the back of the house toward the front door, then out over the threshold.
  2. Wipe the doorstep with the water.
  3. Pour a thin line of salt along the threshold, left to right.
  4. Light the candle just inside the door and say: “Only what comes in peace may enter here.”
  5. Let the candle burn while you are home and awake; never leave it unattended.

Keeping it up

Sweep the salt out after three days and repeat each new moon, or whenever the house feels heavy after a hard visit.
