Blessing a New Home, One Room at a Time
A prayerful welcome to the life you will live there.

A new home may arrive with boxes, uncertainty, and a surprising amount of dust. Before every shelf is arranged, you can take a moment to name the kind of life you hope to build there. Makeda’s shop includes themes of home blessing and new beginnings. This Journal exercise offers a simple Christian prayer practice without special objects or promised supernatural protection.
Begin with ordinary care
Check smoke alarms, safe exits, locks, and other practical needs. If something is unsafe, attend to it directly. Prayer does not replace maintenance or physical security. Clear enough space to move comfortably; there is no need to make the home look finished.
Choose a hope for each space
- At the entrance, consider hospitality and healthy boundaries.
- In the kitchen, consider nourishment and gratitude.
- In a place of rest, consider sleep and care for your body.
- In a shared space, consider honest conversation and patience.
You can do this seated, from one spot, or simply in writing. There is no prescribed route and no consequence for leaving a room out. Invite housemates to participate only if they wish.
Keep the words simple
“God, bless the life we will share in this home. Help us offer welcome without neglecting our boundaries, care for what we have, and make room for rest and kindness. Amen.”
The prayer is original Crossroads Journal writing. It is not an Ethiopian Orthodox rite, Makeda’s proprietary practice, or a guarantee against illness, conflict, or danger.
Make the blessing visible in an action
Choose one small act: share a meal, create a comfortable place to rest, or discuss household responsibilities. A hopeful intention becomes meaningful when it shapes how people treat one another.
