Crystals for Spells: Meanings and How to Use Them

By Seraphina

Stones have been carried as amulets for thousands of years, from Egyptian carnelian to the jet charms of Roman Britain. In modern witchcraft, a crystal is used as a focus: something you can hold, see and place to keep an intention present.

How to cleanse and charge a crystal

  • Smoke: pass it through rosemary, sage or incense smoke.
  • Moonlight: leave it on a windowsill overnight, especially at the full moon.
  • Earth: bury it in a pot of soil for a day.
  • Sound: ring a bell or singing bowl near it.
  • Water: rinse briefly in running water. Avoid this for selenite, which dissolves, and for soft or porous stones.

A simple crystal spell

  • Choose one stone for one clear intention.
  • Cleanse it, then hold it and say your intention out loud three times.
  • Place it with a candle in a matching colour and let the candle burn safely while you focus.
  • Carry or keep the stone where you'll see it until the intention is met, then thank it and cleanse it again.

Crystals are not a substitute for medical care. Never put stones in drinking water unless you know they are non-toxic.
