Angel Oracle Cards: Meanings and How to Read Them
By Seraphina
Angel oracle cards are a gentle cousin of tarot. Unlike tarot, there is no fixed structure: every deck is written by its own author, with its own number of cards, names and guidebook. Most decks are built around encouragement and guidance, so the tone is usually softer than tarot.
Because decks differ, always start with your deck's own guidebook. The themes below appear in many angel decks and are a useful starting point when you meet a card you don't recognise.
Angel oracle vs tarot
- Tarot has 78 cards in a set structure; oracle decks can have anywhere from about 30 to 60+ cards.
- Tarot shows hardship as well as joy; angel decks focus on comfort, support and next steps.
- Oracle cards are often read upright only. Some readers treat a reversed card as 'not yet' or 'look closer'.

A simple angel card reading
- Sit quietly for a minute and breathe slowly.
- Ask an open question, such as 'What do I need to know about…?'
- Shuffle until it feels right, then draw one card, or three for past, present and guidance.
- Read the image first, then the guidebook. Write down the card and how it relates to your week.
Oracle cards are a tool for reflection and encouragement. They don't replace medical, legal or financial advice.
